North Bay selected to host 2013 World Ringette Championship
Ottawa/North Bay, Ontario – April 7, 2011 – Ringette Canada today announced that the City of North Bay has won the bid to host the 2013 World Ringette Championship. The event, which will be held in late December 2013, will see competition among the top ringette athletes in the world. Finland currently holds the world title after defeating Canada at the 2010 World Ringette Championship held in Tampere, Finland.
“In 2013 we will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of our sport, so we are thrilled to be able to host the 2013 World Ringette Championship in North Bay, the birthplace of our great game,” said Jane Casson, president of Ringette Canada. “We were very pleased with the quality of the bids and particularly with the chance to bring the event home to the community that founded our sport in 1963.”
The 2013 event will be the tenth world championship for the sport, with the first event being held in Gloucester, Ontario in 1990. The world championship title will be contested at North Bay’s historical Memorial Gardens and will be joined by age-group events in other arenas in the North Bay area, bringing together the entire ringette community from around the world. Over 250 volunteers will be involved in the planning and implementation of the event.
"We are honoured to be chosen as hosts for the 2013 World Ringette Championship,” said Jeff Francom, chair of the North Bay bid committee. “This event will combine our pride as the birthplace of ringette celebrating the 50th anniversary of our sport with the excitement of watching our greatest athletes compete for a World Championship."
